About the view

Okavango Delta Night Sky

The view opens low and wide above a still channel that cuts straight through the heart of the Okavango Delta, its water holding the sky like a mirror. Tall palms rise in dark silhouette along the left bank, their fronds fanning into a violet dusk that has not quite finished burning. Above them, the Milky Way arches in a great luminous sweep — deep indigo at the edges softening through lavender and rose toward a pale golden glow at the horizon where the last of the day's warmth lingers. Thousands of stars scatter across the upper sky in loose clusters, and the galactic core pulses at the center of the arch with clouds of dusty purple and white. Everything reflects below in the channel: sky, stars, and the faint amber horizon, so that the composition feels balanced between two infinities.

The history & when to go

The Okavango Delta is one of the largest inland deltas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike most river systems, the Okavango does not reach the sea; instead it flows inland into the Kalahari basin, spreading across northwestern Botswana and creating a vast seasonal floodplain that supports exceptional concentrations of wildlife. The delta was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014, recognized for its outstanding ecological processes and biodiversity.

The dry season, roughly May through October, brings the annual flood waters, which peak between June and August, and offers the clearest, driest nights for watching the sky come alive overhead.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Maun finds a home on your wall.
