About the view

Okavango Delta Lily Pond

The view looks out across a still channel of the Okavango Delta at what feels like first light, when mist softens the far bank into a pale blue haze. Cream-yellow blooms open across the foreground, each one resting on a broad, flat leaf that mirrors the cool water beneath it. Slender reeds rise in loose clusters toward the misty horizon, their reflections dissolving into the deep teal of the channel. The palette moves from rich blue-green at the center to the softest silver-white at the sky's edge, with the flowers themselves glowing almost luminous against the quiet water.

The history & when to go

The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest inland deltas, fed each year by seasonal floodwaters that travel from the Angolan highlands and spread across the Kalahari Basin. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 2014, recognizing both its ecological significance and the remarkable fact that a vast river system fans out not into an ocean but into the sands of a desert. The delta supports extraordinary concentrations of wildlife and has sustained communities and traditional ways of travel — notably the mokoro, a dugout canoe — for generations.

Early morning and the dry season, roughly May through October, offer the clearest water and the fullest bloom, when the floodplains are at their most expansive and the light sits low and golden on the surface.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Maun finds a home on your wall.
