About the view

Kalahari Dirt Road Giraffe

A rust-red track cuts straight through the Kalahari scrubland, narrowing to a point on the pale horizon where a distant flat-topped ridge dissolves into a bleached sky. The view is from low and central — as though you are the driver, engine off, holding your breath — looking out over twin tyre lines pressed into burnt-orange earth. On either side, tall dry grasses catch what feels like late-afternoon light, glowing amber and ochre, while scattered low trees push dark smudges of green against the warmth. At the very heart of the composition, relaxed and unhurried, a giraffe crosses the road in full stride, its long neck tilting gently, its patterned coat almost the same deep copper as the track itself. The whole scene shimmers with heat and stillness in equal measure.

The history & when to go

The Kalahari is one of Africa's great semi-arid expanses, stretching across Botswana and into neighbouring countries. Though often called a desert, it receives enough seasonal rainfall to support grasses, shrubs and a wide range of wildlife, including large populations of giraffe. Botswana has long prioritised conservation, and the areas surrounding Maun see giraffe moving freely across unfenced land, crossing tracks and open ground as they always have.

The dry season, roughly May through October, brings the clearest skies and the most concentrated wildlife activity, making encounters like this one especially likely in the golden hours around dusk.

Kalahari's Open Road, Always Yours – Kalahari Dirt Road Giraffe Maun · Gallery Canvas

A lone giraffe crosses a rust-red dirt track stretching into the vast Kalahari horizon, dry grass rippling gold on either side under a pale, breathless sky. This watercolor study of a Maun safari road captures the scene in warm amber, sienna, and ivory, still and quietly wild.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Maun finds a home on your wall.
