About the view

Ohrid Old Town Hillside

Terracotta rooftops tumble down the hillside in warm waves of rust and amber, half-swallowed by a dense surge of deep green foliage. The view looks across Ohrid Old Town from a slightly elevated vantage, where white-walled houses with wide bay windows and generous balconies stack against one another in cheerful disorder. Tall, dark trees punctuate the scene like exclamation marks, and a slender tower rises above the roofline on the left, pale against a softly diffused sky. In the distance, the lake opens up in cool silver-blue, the far mountains dissolving into haze where water meets cloud. The whole composition hums with the contrast between that vivid, almost lush greenery and the warm glow of the tiled roofs pressing through it.

The history & when to go

Ohrid's old town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized both for its exceptional natural setting and its remarkable concentration of cultural monuments. The town has been continuously inhabited for millennia and served as an important center of early Slavic literacy and Orthodox Christianity. At its peak during the medieval period it was home to a significant number of churches, and it remains a place of active religious and cultural life today.

Late spring and early summer bring the hillside to its fullest green, making this view especially vivid before the summer heat softens the landscape to gold.
