Ancient Theatre of Ohrid

The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid sweeps across the foreground in broad, curving tiers of warm stone, its semicircular rows fanning outward from a sandy, open stage below. The view looks down and across the cavea from above, giving the full arc of the seating a gentle, almost embrace-like shape. Beyond the theatre's upper edge, the old town rises in clusters of white-walled houses with terracotta rooftops, dense with tall, dark trees and punctuated by the quiet vertical of an old tower. Further still, the blue expanse of Lake Ohrid stretches toward a horizon of hazy, layered mountains under a soft, cloud-diffused sky. The palette moves from the tawny golds of the stage floor through mossy greens and earthy reds, cooling gradually into the grey-blues of water and distant peaks.

The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid dates to the Hellenistic period and is one of the ancient theatres in the broader Balkan region. It was rediscovered during the twentieth century and has since been carefully restored, returning it to use as a venue for live performances. The theatre sits within Ohrid's UNESCO-listed region, a designation that recognizes both the city's cultural heritage and the exceptional natural value of the lake and its surroundings.
