About the view

Ohrid Harbour Cove Village

A dark-hulled wooden boat rests at the edge of the shallows in this sun-drenched corner of Ohrid Harbour, its warm amber interior glowing against water so transparently green it barely reads as water at all. The view looks out from close to shore, where rounded pale stones edge the waterline and dense, dark foliage crowds the left side of the composition. Scattered small boats float in the middle distance, and a hillside of terracotta-roofed houses climbs the right, threaded through with deep green canopy. The sky is an unbroken, high-summer blue that deepens toward the horizon, where a low headland dissolves into haze. The palette shifts from jade and turquoise at your feet to cobalt at the edge of the world.

The history

Ohrid is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe, and its harbour has served as a centre of trade, culture and faith since antiquity. The city flourished as a seat of learning in the early medieval period, and the surrounding lake — recognized alongside the old town as a UNESCO World Heritage site — is considered one of the oldest lakes on Earth. That layered history, stretching from early Slavic literacy to Byzantine Christianity to Ottoman influence, has shaped every stone and roofline along this shore.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ohrid finds a home on your wall.
