About the view

Mykonos Windmills Kato Mili

Five whitewashed towers step back in a receding line from right to left, each one a little smaller as the hilltop drops toward the sea. The nearest windmill fills the right side of the composition, its thatched cap casting a soft shadow across bright white walls, its bare wooden arms flung wide against a deep Aegean blue. Golden grasses sweep across the foreground, bent and luminous as if the wind is moving through them right now. Behind the row of Kato Mili windmills, the water shifts from teal to cobalt, and wispy clouds trail across the upper sky in long, feathered streaks. The scene is viewed from slightly below the ridge, giving the structures a quiet grandeur without any hint of drama.

The history & when to go

The windmills were built during the Venetian period of rule over Mykonos, when the island served as a key trading stop in the Aegean. They were working mills, used by the islanders to grind grain for the merchant ships passing through. Over time their commercial role faded, and most fell silent by the mid-twentieth century. Today the row of mills above the Little Venice neighborhood is among the most recognized silhouettes in the Greek islands, and several of the structures have been carefully preserved.

Late afternoon is the finest moment to stand here in person, when the low sun turns the white walls golden and the sea behind them deepens to an almost impossible shade of blue.
