About the view

Little Venice Waterfront Mykonos

The view looks out from the water's edge, low and close, as though the Aegean itself is the vantage point. A churning wave crashes against dark rocks in the foreground, sending a column of white foam surging upward toward the balconied facades of Little Venice. The houses march left to right along the Mykonos waterfront — their lower levels a deep, burnished red, their upper stories bright white, punctuated by doors and railings in sharp cobalt blue. Behind them, a stormy sky presses down in layers of steel and slate, broken only by a single warm bloom of apricot and rose where clouds part near the horizon. In the far distance, the soft silhouettes of windmills stand just visible through the haze. The composition pulls the eye from the turbulent foreground all the way to that quiet, glowing break in the sky — drama and stillness in the same breath.

The history

Little Venice takes its name from the way its houses overhang the sea, a design that recalls the canal-side architecture of Venice and reflects centuries of Aegean maritime culture. The neighborhood grew from the prosperity of sea captains and merchants whose trade routes once tied these islands to ports across the Mediterranean. Today it remains one of the most recognizable stretches of waterfront in all of Greece.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Mykonos finds a home on your wall.
