About the view

Mestia Valley Haystack Meadows

Two golden haystacks rise from a wide green meadow, their tall wooden poles spiking upward like quiet sentinels against the immensity of what lies beyond. A chestnut horse grazes unhurriedly to the right, head bowed to the flower-dotted grass, entirely at ease. Behind them, the Mestia Valley opens into layers of deep forest green, then pale ribbons of morning mist drifting between the slopes, and finally the great snow-covered peak catching the first blush of alpenglow — rose and amber warming its upper face while the lower mountain remains cool blue and white. The sky above is thin and clear, almost luminous. The scene is viewed from ground level, close and intimate, which makes the mountain feel all the more staggering in scale.

The history & when to go

Svaneti is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions of the Caucasus, and the high valleys around Mestia preserve traditions of farming, horsemanship and haymaking that have endured for generations. The distinctive stacked haystacks seen across these meadows are a practical and long-practiced part of highland life, shaped by the demands of long winters at altitude. The region was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, a testament to how fully the land and its people have remained intertwined.

Late spring through early summer brings the meadows to full, vivid green, and early morning is when the valley mist and alpenglow most reliably appear together just like this.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Mestia finds a home on your wall.
