About the view

Mestia Svan Towers Dusk

Seen from a slight rise above the rooftops at the close of day, this view looks across the clustered Svan towers of Mestia just as the valley surrenders to dusk. The foreground is a quiet world of cool slate-grey roofs and low stone houses, two amber windows glowing like embers against the blue. The towers rise in a loose group at the center — broad-shouldered, tapered, ancient — their warm stone forms holding the last of the evening's shape before they dissolve into silhouette. Beyond them the valley walls fold in deep indigo, drawing the eye upward to a snow-capped peak whose twin summits catch the final pink-orange flush of sunset while the sky above fades through rose to a soft, still blue.

The history & when to go

Svan towers are among the most distinctive defensive structures in the Caucasus, built primarily between the ninth and twelfth centuries by the Svan people of what is now northwestern Georgia. Families constructed them beside their homes as places of refuge during raids and blood feuds, and many towers rise four or five stories above the village. Upper Svaneti, of which Mestia is the principal settlement, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its exceptional collection of towers.

The light in this scene — that narrow window between sunset and full dark — appears at its most vivid in summer, when the high peaks hold color long after the valley falls into shadow.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Mestia finds a home on your wall.
