About the view

Ushguli Medieval Tower Village

A glacial river bends through sun-warmed meadows in the foreground, drawing the eye toward the cluster of ancient tall towers that rise from Ushguli like a stone forest. The view is wide and unhurried, taken from across the valley floor, where the grass shifts between deep emerald and soft golden yellow in the low-angled light. Warm stone towers of varying heights crowd together above the village rooftops, their silhouettes framed perfectly by the steep green flanks of the surrounding mountains. Above it all, a massive snow-covered peak fills the upper half of the composition, its glaciers dissolving into wisps of cloud against a calm blue sky. The contrast between that brilliant white summit and the rich greens below gives the scene an almost unreal clarity.

The history & when to go

Ushguli sits at roughly 2,200 meters above sea level in Georgia's Svanetia region and is widely regarded as one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. The tower houses that define the village skyline served historically as places of refuge during times of conflict and were built and maintained by individual family clans. The entire Upper Svaneti region, including Ushguli, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 in recognition of its outstanding medieval architecture and cultural landscape.

Summer brings the valley to its most vivid green, with long daylight hours and the clearest views of the surrounding peaks.
