About the view

Temple of Hatshepsut Deir el-Bahari

The view stretches straight down the ceremonial causeway toward the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, as though you are standing at the threshold of the desert itself, looking in. Three broad colonnaded terraces rise in clean horizontal lines against the face of a vast natural amphitheater of cliff, its ridges folding and curling in deep amber and burnt sienna. The warm stone of the temple glows a soft gold in what reads as the last angled light of afternoon, the shadows between each column cutting dark, rhythmic stripes across the facade. The palette moves from pale cream at the foreground causeway up through honey and ochre, deepening to a fierce, smoldering orange where the cliff face swallows the sky. There is almost nothing soft about the shapes — only that relentless geometry set against ancient, wind-carved rock.

The history & when to go

The Temple of Hatshepsut was built for one of ancient Egypt's most remarkable rulers, the pharaoh Hatshepsut, who reigned during the Eighteenth Dynasty. Constructed over many years to serve as her mortuary temple, it was designed to integrate directly into the natural cliff face behind it, a deliberate harmony between architecture and landscape that remains extraordinary. Hatshepsut was one of the longest-reigning female pharaohs, and her temple became a place of worship long after her death. It is among the best-preserved temples on the west bank.

The low sun of early morning and late afternoon sets the cliffs fully alight, flooding the terraces in exactly the amber warmth captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Luxor finds a home on your wall.
