About the view

Colossi of Memnon Luxor

Two colossal seated figures dominate the foreground, their weathered warm stone forms rising from the flat plain of Luxor's west bank with quiet, ancient authority. Tall palms lean into the left edge of the composition, their feathery crowns catching the same amber morning glow that warms the statues' broad laps and eroded faces. Behind them, the Theban hills roll in long waves of dusty mauve and rose, and above it all, five hot air balloons float across a clear pale sky in bursts of red, orange, and gold — vivid punctuation marks against the soft blue expanse.

The history & when to go

The Colossi of Memnon have stood on the west bank of the Nile for more than three thousand years, originally flanking the entrance to a vast mortuary temple built for the pharaoh Amenhotep III. That temple has largely disappeared over the centuries, leaving the two immense statues as the most visible remnant of what was once one of the largest religious complexes in ancient Egypt. In antiquity, one of the figures was famous throughout the Roman world for producing a haunting sound at dawn, drawing travelers from across the empire who recorded their visits in inscriptions still visible on the stone today.

Early morning is the ideal time to stand before them, when the low sun turns the plain golden.
