About the view

Nile River Felucca Luxor

A single felucca glides through the center of the frame, its tall white sail catching the last warmth of a late afternoon somewhere along the Nile in Luxor. The water is a wide sweep of cool blue and soft teal, the sail's reflection trembling gently across the surface. Behind the boat, a dense green bank rises in layers — golden reeds at the water's edge, then a canopy of tall palms and fuller, rounded trees in deep emerald. Beyond them, a long ridge of hills fades into dusty rose and amber where the sun is beginning to soften. The sail sits at the center holding everything together.

The history & when to go

The felucca is one of the oldest working sail designs still in regular use anywhere in the world. These narrow wooden vessels have carried people and goods along the Nile for centuries, and in Luxor they remain a living part of the river rather than a relic of it. The hills visible in the distance are part of the same landscape that conceals the Valley of the Kings, where generations of pharaohs were buried.

Late afternoon, when the desert hills flush pink and the water deepens to green, is when this stretch of the river looks exactly as it does here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Luxor finds a home on your wall.
