About the view

Karnak Temple Great Colonnade

The view looks straight up and through the heart of Karnak Temple's Great Colonnade in Luxor, the perspective pulled low so that the towering columns rise on either side like canyon walls. Warm amber and burnt orange flood every surface, the carved reliefs catching full midday sun in deep, shadow-cut grooves. Fronds of tall palms press in from both edges, vivid green against the blazing stone. Between the columns, the composition narrows to a pale blue sky and, perfectly centered in that gap of light, the slim silhouette of an obelisk. A single soft cloud drifts just above it, almost luminous. The whole scene radiates heat and scale.

The history & when to go

Karnak Temple is one of the largest religious complexes ever built. Construction began around 2055 BCE and continued across roughly two thousand years, with successive pharaohs adding courts, halls and monuments to the site. The Great Hypostyle Hall alone contains 134 massive columns, and the complex as a whole covers more than a hundred hectares on the east bank of the Nile. It was the principal temple of Amun and served as a center of religious and political power throughout much of ancient Egyptian history.

Winter mornings, when the sun is still low and the golden light rakes across the carvings at a sharp angle, offer the most dramatic version of this view in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Luxor finds a home on your wall.
