About the view

Nelson Mandela Bridge Johannesburg

The view sweeps in from an elevated angle above the rail yard, looking along the full length of the Nelson Mandela Bridge as it curves toward the heart of Johannesburg. Two tall cable-stayed towers dominate the right side of the composition, their crossed bracing lit in vivid magenta and violet, cables fanning outward like luminous threads stitched across a deep purple sky. The bridge deck itself blazes with streaks of pink and red light, drawing the eye along its arc toward a glittering mid-distance skyline of amber, gold, and cool blue. Below and to the left, the rail lines fan apart in dark parallel ribbons, their geometry a quiet counterpoint to all that electric color. The whole scene hovers between dusk and full night, the sky still holding a bruised violet warmth behind the towers.

The history & when to go

Nelson Mandela Bridge opened in 2003 and was, at the time of its completion, the longest cable-stayed bridge in Southern Africa. It was named in honor of Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who became South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. The bridge links the Johannesburg central business district to the Braamfontein precinct, and its construction was part of a broader effort to regenerate the city center in the post-apartheid era.

The bridge's colored lighting is at its most dramatic on clear winter evenings, when the dry Highveld air sharpens every line against the sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Johannesburg finds a home on your wall.
