About the view

Jacaranda Tree Lined Street

A quiet residential street in Johannesburg stretches toward the horizon, framed on both sides by tall, broad-canopied trees in full bloom. Their arching branches meet overhead to form a living tunnel, every limb weighted with dense clusters of violet and lavender blossom. The light filtering through is soft and diffused, casting the road itself in a cool lilac wash where fallen petals have drifted across the asphalt. On the left, deep green foliage anchors the shadows beneath the trunks, while the right side blazes with a shock of magenta among the purple, the whole composition pulling the eye down that long, vanishing avenue with an irresistible sense of depth and stillness.

The history & when to go

Jacaranda trees were introduced to South Africa in the early nineteenth century and took hold so thoroughly in Johannesburg's northern suburbs that they became inseparable from the city's identity. Each year in October and November the trees bloom simultaneously, a seasonal event that residents have marked for generations. The phenomenon is closely associated with the university examination period, and a local tradition holds that the first fallen bloom brings either good luck or a reminder to start studying, depending on who is telling the story.

In person, the street is at its most vivid in late October, when the canopy is at peak bloom and morning light catches the violet haze before the wind lifts the petals free.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Johannesburg finds a home on your wall.
