About the view

Cape Town City Hall

The clock tower rises at the heart of this scene, its verdigris-capped dome catching the full force of a Cape Town midday. The view looks up from street level, giving the warm stone facade a commanding presence as rows of arched windows and stately columns sweep across the frame. A tall palm pushes into the composition just left of center, its crown of fronds lit to a vivid gold against a sky of deep, unbroken blue. Long shadows pool beneath the broad entrance steps, and the sunbaked foreground plaza throws amber light back up onto the building's lower reaches, tying the whole scene together in a palette of honey, teal and cerulean.

The history & when to go

Cape Town City Hall has stood on Darling Street since 1905, a centrepiece of the city's civic life for well over a century. It was here, on 11 February 1990, that Nelson Mandela made his first public speech after his release from prison — a moment that reverberated around the world and marked a turning point in South Africa's history. The building continues to serve as a working cultural venue, home to the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and a living piece of the country's democratic story.

The building is at its most golden in the late morning, when the sun strikes the facade square-on and the sky above Table Bay deepens to the shade of blue you see here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Johannesburg finds a home on your wall.
