About the view

Jiufen Teahouse Lantern Steps

Dusk settles over Jiufen in deep cobalt and slate, and the scene pivots entirely on the collision of that cool sky with the fierce warmth of red lanterns. Dozens of them line every tier of the teahouse, strung in long, glowing rows that spill downward along the stepped rooftops toward the valley below. The building fills the right side of the composition, its dark timber balconies layered one above the other, each edge traced in amber and crimson. Beyond the lowest terrace, the lantern strings continue down the alley stairs, becoming a winding river of soft red light that fades into the blue-green foliage and misty ridgeline. The palette is almost theatrical — ember reds and honey yellows burning against the cool dusk — yet it feels entirely earned by the place.

The history & when to go

The Jiufen Old Street area, where this iconic multi-story teahouse sits along the lantern-lit steps, became one of Taiwan's most recognized images in the early 1990s after the town appeared prominently in Hou Hsiao-hsien's film A City of Sadness. The area's history runs deeper still, stretching back to a gold-mining boom in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that drew a rush of settlers and left behind the tiered architecture so characteristic of the hillside today.

The lanterns glow every evening, but the hour just after sunset — when the sky holds that rich blue and the lights reach full warmth — is when this view is at its most striking.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Jiufen finds a home on your wall.
