About the view

Jiufen Cove Sandy Bay

From a high ridgeline vantage point, the view opens wide over Jiufen's sheltered sandy bay, its crescent shore catching the last amber warmth of a setting sun. The beach glows a deep gold against the calm, pale-turquoise water of the cove, which curves gently inward before opening to the broader sea beyond. A densely forested hillside rises steeply on the left, its rich emerald greens darkening toward the summit, while a smaller wooded headland reaches into the water on the right, splitting the bay from the open Pacific. Low white buildings of a small harbor settlement nestle quietly at the hill's base. Above it all, the sky blooms in layers of peach, gold, and soft lavender, with loose ribbons of cloud lit from below by the fading sun.

The history & when to go

Jiufen sits in the Ruifang District of New Taipei City and rose to prominence during the Japanese colonial period, when gold was discovered nearby in the late nineteenth century. The resulting mining boom transformed what had been a modest hillside settlement into a busy, prosperous town. When the gold ran out in the latter twentieth century, Jiufen gradually quieted, and its terraced lanes and harbor views were rediscovered by visitors drawn to its layered history and dramatic coastal scenery.

Late afternoon in the warmer months rewards visitors with exactly this quality of golden light washing over the bay, when the sun drops toward the hills and the water holds every color the sky offers.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Jiufen finds a home on your wall.
