About the view

Jiufen Old Street Lantern Stairs

A narrow stairway climbs toward darkness at the heart of Jiufen Old Street, viewed from ground level as though you have just stepped into the alley and paused before the ascent. On either side, dark-timbered storefronts press close, their overhanging eaves strung with round paper lanterns glowing deep amber and scarlet. The wet stone underfoot catches every reflection — pools of orange and gold rippling across the slick surface like a second sky. The lanterns multiply as the stairs rise, shrinking into dots of warm light that dissolve into a haze of teal and shadow at the top of the frame. The composition pulls the eye upward and inward, the symmetry of the alley walls creating a tunnel of warmth against the cool, misty dark beyond.

The history & when to go

Jiufen Old Street developed during a gold-rush era that brought prosperity and settlers to this remote hillside community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. When the gold trade declined, the town quieted for decades before finding renewed life as a destination celebrated for its atmospheric lanes, tea houses, and preserved merchant architecture. It gained wide international attention after being featured in films, most notably *A City of Sadness* (1989), that drew on its visual character, and today the old street lanterns are among Taiwan's most recognized evening scenes.

The lanterns glow most beautifully on rainy evenings, when mist softens the light and the wet stairs mirror every warm color back to you.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Jiufen finds a home on your wall.
