About the view

Jiufen Old Street Lantern Stairs

The view looks upward from the base of the famous lantern stairs of Jiufen Old Street, the steps rising steeply between tightly packed wooden shophouses whose warm amber interiors spill light onto dark eaves and latticed balconies. Dozens of crimson lanterns hang in loose cascades on both sides, their glow deepening to a rich tangerine where they cluster closest together. Above the rooflines a strip of deep twilight blue holds the last of the evening sky, cool and clear, making every lantern burn more vividly against it. Trailing green leaves and potted plants tuck into corners, softening the geometry of the stairway as it narrows toward the vanishing point at the top of the composition.

The history & when to go

Jiufen rose to prominence during a gold rush in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the mountains above the northeast coast drew miners and merchants and the town grew dense with commerce and life. After the gold ran out the village quieted, then found a second life as a destination beloved for its preserved architecture and atmospheric alleyways. The Old Street stairway lined with red lanterns became one of Taiwan's most recognized images, drawing visitors from across the world who come specifically for that collision of firelight, timber, and hillside mist.

The scene is at its most vivid at dusk in the cooler months between October and December, when the air is crisp and the lanterns glow longest before the sky goes fully dark.
