About the view

Tower of David Citadel

The view looks out across the inner courtyard of the Tower of David Citadel from an elevated vantage point along the ramparts, the scene bathed in the warm, honeyed light of a clear afternoon in Jerusalem. Curved arches run in long, rhythmic rows along both flanking walls, their amber tones glowing against a pale blue sky. Below, the courtyard opens into a patchwork of ancient foundations, low trimmed hedges, and bright strips of green that wind between the warm stones. At the far end, a slender minaret rises quietly above the crenellated roofline, anchoring the whole composition in something unhurried and enduring.

The history & when to go

The Tower of David has served as the symbolic gateway to Jerusalem's Old City for centuries. The site's origins stretch back more than two thousand years, though the structures visible today reflect centuries of addition and reconstruction by Byzantine, early Islamic, Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman rulers in turn. The citadel has functioned as a palace, a fortress, and a place of garrison, and it now houses a museum dedicated to the history of Jerusalem. Its position beside the Jaffa Gate has made it one of the most recognized silhouettes in the city.

Late afternoon, when the low sun turns every surface to gold and casts long shadows across the courtyard ruins, is when this view is at its most quietly spectacular.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Jerusalem finds a home on your wall.
