About the view

Dome of the Rock

The golden dome rises at the very heart of the scene, its great curved form catching the last fire of the sun as it sinks behind the distant hills of Jerusalem. The view looks across the rooftops of the Old City, warm stone buildings clustered low beneath a sky that burns in deep amber, tangerine, and crimson. Tall, slender trees punctuate the cityscape in dark silhouette, and a graceful minaret stands to the left, its outline traced against the blaze. The sun itself sits just behind the dome, flooding the composition with a radiance that turns the entire sky into a single glowing ember.

The history & when to go

The Dome of the Rock has stood on the Temple Mount since the late seventh century, making it the oldest surviving work of Islamic architecture in the world. Built during the Umayyad period, it was completed around 691 CE and has been a defining landmark of Jerusalem's skyline ever since. The structure shelters a sacred rock central to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic tradition, and its iconic dome has been restored and maintained across many centuries. Few places on earth carry the combined spiritual significance that this site holds for so many people across so many faiths.

Sunset, when the sky ignites and the dome seems to glow from within, is the moment this view is most unforgettable — best seen from the elevated vantage points along the Old City's eastern edge.
