About the view

Church of All Nations Jerusalem

The view sweeps across the Mount of Olives from an elevated vantage, looking down through a canopy of tall, slender trees and dense silver-green groves toward the Church of All Nations in Jerusalem. The facade glows in warm golden morning light — its arched portico richly detailed, a mosaic shimmering above the entrance, and two gilded domes catching the sun like lanterns set against a pale, luminous sky. To the left, tiered rows of warm stone monuments step down the hillside in quiet procession. The palette moves from deep forest greens and olive golds in the foreground through amber and ochre at the church's walls, before lifting into the soft blue-white haze of the city spread across the ridge behind.

The history & when to go

The Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony, sits at the foot of the Mount of Olives beside the Garden of Gethsemane. The current building was completed in 1924, designed by the architect Antonio Barluzzi and funded by Catholic communities from across the world — hence its name. It was built over the remains of earlier Byzantine and Crusader-era churches on the same site, each generation finding reason to return to this particular ground. Inside, the church enshrines a section of bedrock that tradition holds as the place where Jesus prayed on the night before his crucifixion.

The soft gold light captured here belongs to early morning, when the sun rises over the Judean hills — worth rising early to witness.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
