About the view

Dakar Seaside Mosque

Two slender towers rise above the coastal neighborhood, their pale warm forms crowned with green domes that echo the turquoise of the Atlantic stretching behind them. The view looks out across the rust-red earth and low rooftops of Dakar, where scattered green trees punctuate the ochre ground before giving way to the full breadth of ocean. Bright afternoon light falls evenly across the scene, leaving the arched colonnades of the main hall in soft rose shadow while the twin minarets catch the full brightness of a wide West African sky. Billowing clouds drift above the horizon, their white shapes rhyming with the pale towers below.

The history & when to go

The Mosque of the Divinity, known locally as the Mosquée de la Divinité, sits directly on the Atlantic shore in the Ouakam neighborhood of Dakar. It is among the most visually distinctive places of worship in Senegal, celebrated above all for its setting at the very edge of the sea. Senegal has a long history of Islam woven deeply into its culture and civic life, and coastal mosques like this one reflect that tradition of bringing faith into daily encounter with the landscape.

Early morning or late afternoon brings the warmest light to this view, when the ocean shifts from green to deep blue and the towers glow against a softening sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dakar finds a home on your wall.
