About the view

African Renaissance Monument Dakar

Three towering figures rise against a wide, cloudless blue sky — a man lifting a child toward the horizon, a woman at his side, all three forms caught mid-motion and glowing with deep amber warmth. The view looks up from the base of a long ceremonial staircase, which draws the eye in a strong diagonal line from the lower edge of the composition straight to the feet of the African Renaissance Monument in Dakar. Tall palms and scattered greenery flank the steps on both sides, their soft greens a quiet counterpoint to the rich burnt-orange of the figures above. The light feels like late afternoon — long and golden, laying heavy shadows into every contoured fold of the sculpture and turning the warm stone of the hillside almost luminous against that pale, endless sky.

The history & when to go

Unveiled in 2010 to mark fifty years of Senegalese independence, the African Renaissance Monument stands as the tallest statue in Africa. It was conceived as a symbol of Africa's emergence from centuries of colonialism and hardship, and its upward-pointing gesture — the child held toward the future — is the monument's central, deliberate message. Senegal's government commissioned the work as a statement of national pride and continental solidarity, and it has since become one of the most recognized landmarks on the African continent.

The golden-hour light captured here is at its most vivid in the dry season, roughly November through February, when the sky holds that particular depth of blue and the sun sets slowly over the Atlantic.

A colossal bronze family surges from a hilltop above the Atlantic, the man lifting a child skyward toward an open horizon of light. This watercolor study of the monumental statue in Dakar blazes in warm amber and gold against a soft cerulean sky, radiating strength and forward motion.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dakar finds a home on your wall.
