Pink Lake Retba Shore
A small wooden boat rests motionless at the shore of Lake Retba, its deep amber hull the only warm dark shape against an expanse of vivid, swirling pink. The water stretches wide and nearly flat, its color shifting from deep rose at the center to pale blush where it laps at a pale, salt-crusted edge. A thin ribbon of low scrubland runs across the horizon beneath a sky of deep, unbroken cobalt blue. The composition is almost impossibly still — that single boat anchoring the eye before the pink pulls it outward in every direction.
The history & when to go
Lake Retba, known locally as Lac Rose, sits in a basin separated from the Atlantic Ocean by narrow dunes. Its extraordinary color comes from microorganisms that thrive in its exceptionally high salt concentration, one of the highest of any body of water on earth. For generations, workers have harvested salt from the lake by hand, collecting it from the shallow floor and mounding it along the banks. The lake is recognized internationally for both its ecological character and its cultural significance to the communities who have long depended on it.
The color is most intense during the dry season, roughly November through June, when reduced rainfall allows the salinity to peak and the pink deepens to its most vivid and saturated hue.
