About the view

Goree Island Colorful Alley

A narrow lane on Gorée Island pulls the eye toward a strip of bright sky at the far end, where foliage catches the midday sun in loose bursts of green and gold. Warm amber walls rise on the left, their surface glowing as though lit from within, while a deeper crimson wall anchors the right side of the composition. Teal-shuttered windows face each other across the passage, their cool blue-green a vivid contrast to all that heat and fire. Low leafy plants spill along the base of each wall, and the sandy path between them fades gently into the distance, giving the scene an effortless, beckoning depth.

The history & when to go

Gorée Island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, recognized for its role in the transatlantic slave trade between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. It served as a holding and transit point under successive European colonial powers, and the House of Slaves on the island stands today as one of the most visited memorial sites in West Africa. The island's architecture, shaped by centuries of Dutch, Portuguese, British, and French presence, is what gives its lanes their vivid, layered character.

The light along these alleys is most dramatic in the late morning, when the sun angles sharply between the walls and the colors read at their most saturated.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dakar finds a home on your wall.
