About the view

Point Sur Lighthouse Headland

Rolling green hills sweep across the foreground in long, wind-combed curves before the land drops away to a pale arc of beach connecting the headland to the shore. The view looks seaward from an elevated inland position, and the light is dusk — the sky moves from soft peach at the horizon through blush pink into cool violet-blue overhead. The lighthouse lantern already glows warm gold against the dimming air. The headland's rounded crown is deep green, its steep flanks raw ochre where the cliffs meet a slate-blue sea. Point Sur Lighthouse sits at the top of it all, small but luminous, anchoring the whole composition.

The history & when to go

The lighthouse has guided mariners along this hazardous stretch of the California coast since 1889, warning ships away from rocks that claimed many vessels in the years before it was built. The station was staffed continuously for much of the twentieth century, with keeper families living in the cluster of buildings that still crown the headland. It remains the only complete, turn-of-the-century light station open to the public in California and is managed today as a state historic park.

Sunset is the moment to see this view in person, when the cliffs turn warm and the lantern begins to assert itself against the fading sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Big Sur finds a home on your wall.
