About the view

Big Sur Coastline Highway One

The view opens from a sun-warmed bluff, looking south along the Big Sur coastline as Highway One traces a pale ribbon along the steep hillside to the right. The foreground spills over with golden grasses and low coastal scrub catching the late-morning light, their amber and straw tones anchoring a scene that then lifts dramatically upward into vivid green slopes. Below, dark rock formations break the surf in small white bursts, surrounded by water that moves through every shade of deep teal and cobalt before softening toward the horizon. The ridgeline recedes in layers of olive, sage and hazy blue, mountain after mountain folding into a clear California sky.

The history & when to go

Highway One through Big Sur was completed in 1937 after roughly eighteen years of construction through extremely difficult terrain. It runs approximately ninety miles along the central California coast between San Luis Obispo County and Monterey County and is designated an All-American Road, a distinction awarded to routes considered destinations in their own right. The corridor it passes through is protected across a patchwork of state parks and federal lands, keeping the landscape largely undeveloped and the views along this watercolor-style canvas recognizable to anyone who has driven it.

Late winter through spring brings the hillsides to their deepest green, making the contrast between the grassy slopes and the deep Pacific especially vivid on clear mornings like the one captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Big Sur finds a home on your wall.
