About the view

Pfeiffer Beach Keyhole Arch

The view is taken from the wet sand at Pfeiffer Beach, looking straight toward the Keyhole Arch as the sun drops behind it. The arch frames a burning circle of amber and deep orange, and that glow tunnels forward across the water, pooling in a long molten reflection on the damp shore at your feet. Dark, jagged sea stacks loom on either side, cooling into blue-gray as the sky fades from gold to soft peach at the edges. White foam breaks around scattered boulders in the middle ground, and the wet sand carries every warm tone back toward the viewer like a mirror laid flat against the coast.

The history & when to go

Pfeiffer Beach is part of Los Padres National Forest, within the broader Big Sur coast protected by a combination of state parks and federal land. The Keyhole Arch is a natural opening in a large sea stack just offshore, and it is one of the most recognized features on the California coast. The alignment of the setting sun directly through the arch occurs during a narrow window around the winter solstice, a phenomenon that draws visitors each year to witness that brief passage of light.

Mid-December through mid-January offers the best chance to see the sun frame itself in the arch, ideally on an afternoon when the clouds thin just enough at the horizon.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Big Sur finds a home on your wall.
