About the view

McWay Falls Cove Big Sur

The view opens from a high overlook, looking down through the dark canopy of tall coastal trees whose branches frame the upper edge of the scene. Below, McWay Falls spills in a thin white ribbon from warm rocky cliffs, dropping straight onto a crescent of pale golden sand. The sheltered beach curves in a near-perfect arc, cradling water that shifts from bright turquoise close to shore into a deeper, richer teal where scattered rocks break the surf. Beyond the rocky headland, the open Pacific spreads wide and cobalt to the horizon under a soft, hazy sky. The whole composition moves the eye downward — from shadowed green cliffs, to glowing sand, to that impossibly vivid water — in a way that feels effortless and alive.

The history & when to go

McWay Falls in Big Sur is one of the very few waterfalls along the California coast that drops directly onto a beach. It falls within Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, established in 1962 and named for a pioneering Big Sur pioneer. The cove below the falls is not accessible to visitors on foot, which has helped preserve its untouched character. The waterfall flows year-round, fed by the coastal watershed above the cliffs.

The overlook trail is short and rewarding at any time of year, but winter rains strengthen the falls considerably, making the months from December through March especially dramatic.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Big Sur finds a home on your wall.
