About the view

Ta Prohm Temple Tree Roots

Seen from ground level in an open courtyard, this scene at Ta Prohm captures something that stops people mid-step: a massive tree rising directly from the top of a temple wall, its roots cascading down like slow-motion rivers of pale silver and warm amber. The roots divide and spread around a darkened doorway, framing it with an almost deliberate grace, as though the forest designed the composition itself. Dappled jungle light filters through a canopy of luminous greens above, casting the warm stone walls in shifting tones of ochre, sage and gold. A moss-covered block sits in the foreground, and beyond the shadowed entrance, the forest breathes in soft blues and yellows.

The history & when to go

Ta Prohm was built in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries during the reign of the Khmer king Jayavarman VII, and was originally dedicated to his mother. It functioned as a working monastery and university, with thousands of people recorded as living and working within its grounds. After the Khmer Empire declined, the temple was largely left to the jungle rather than restored, a decision that archaeologists and conservationists have continued to manage carefully. It is part of the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Early morning, before the heat builds and the light turns flat, is when the courtyard glows warmest and the atmosphere feels most alive.

Ancient Wonder Meets Daily Calm – Ta Prohm Temple Tree Roots Angkor Wat · Gallery Canvas

Vast silk-cotton roots spill over ancient sandstone like slow rivers of stone, swallowing doorways whole at Ta Prohm in the heart of Angkor Wat. This watercolor print renders that eerie, luminous scene in warm amber, cool grey root tendrils, and dappled jungle green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Angkor Wat finds a home on your wall.
