About the view

Bayon Temple Face Towers

From ground level, the face towers of Bayon Temple fill the frame with an almost overwhelming presence. The view looks upward from the temple floor, where a single colossal face dominates the left foreground — its downcast eyes and faint, composed smile rendered in deep amber and burnt ochre warmed by what feels like low morning light. Behind it, the central tower rises in layered tiers of cooler shadow and golden warm stone, its own faces emerging from the carved mass like features slowly surfacing from deep thought. A third tower stands in the far right, smaller with distance, set against an open wash of clear cerulean blue that anchors the whole scene and keeps the heavy stone from feeling oppressive.

The history & when to go

Bayon was built at the center of Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. It was constructed as a Buddhist temple, a significant shift from the Hindu traditions of earlier Khmer monuments. The famous faces that crown its towers are believed to represent the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, though scholars have long connected their serene features to Jayavarman VII himself. 216 of these faces gaze outward in the cardinal directions across the surrounding city.

Early morning brings the warmest light directly onto the faces, deepening the gold and shadow that give the towers their extraordinary sense of calm watchfulness.
