About the view

Angkor Wat Sunrise Reflection

The five tiered towers of Angkor Wat rise in silhouette against a sky that bleeds from deep amber at the horizon through layers of gold and peach into a soft, blushing rose overhead. Tall palms punctuate the temple's long roofline on either side, their dark forms echoing the warm stone spires above them. The view is taken from the western reflecting pool at dawn, the still water catching the entire scene in a mirror of molten orange and pink. In the foreground, soft-petaled blooms in pale violet float among broad green leaves, their reflections trembling gently where the colors of the sky pool together beneath the surface.

The history & when to go

Angkor Wat was built in the early twelfth century under the Khmer king Suryavarman II and was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Over the centuries it gradually became a Buddhist site, a transition that shaped much of the religious imagery found throughout its galleries and towers. The complex covers an enormous area and is enclosed by a wide moat. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, and conservation efforts have continued steadily since.

Sunrise from the northern pool is most vivid during the dry season, roughly November through February, when clear skies allow the full spectrum of early-morning color to unfold without interruption.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Angkor Wat finds a home on your wall.
