About the view

Qasr Al Farid Tomb

A lone outcrop rises from a sea of rippled amber sand, its warm stone face carved into a monumental tomb that seems to grow from the rock itself rather than be built upon it. Qasr Al Farid dominates the scene from ground level, viewed across an open desert plain where wind-shaped dunes stretch to the horizon in every direction. The light is golden and low, pouring in from the right in deep amber and burnt orange, setting the sky ablaze with soft clouds edged in rose and pale gold. The carved facade catches the last heat of the day in rich terracotta tones, its stepped upper register and arched doorway thrown into sharp relief against that luminous sky. The composition places the tomb at the center of a vast, humbling emptiness, which only makes it feel more astonishing.

The history

Qasr Al Farid — meaning roughly "the solitary castle" — is the largest tomb at Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 2008. It was carved by the Nabataeans, the same civilization responsible for Petra in Jordan, and dates to around the first century. What makes it singular is that it was never finished: the lower portion of the facade remains rough and unworked, a detail that has fascinated historians for generations.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of AlUla finds a home on your wall.
