About the view

AlUla Old Town Promenade

A broad pedestrian lane stretches toward the horizon at dusk, its warm terracotta tones deepening as the last of the evening light melts into a blush-pink sky. The view is centered and symmetrical — low warm-stone buildings rise on either side, their facades glowing amber beneath strings of bare Edison bulbs looped overhead from one side of the lane to the other. A single tall palm anchors the middle distance, its silhouette catching the fading rose of the sky behind it, while the soft shapes of rocky outcrops and a slender tower drift into the haze beyond. A handful of figures move quietly in the background, small against the openness of AlUla Old Town Promenade, giving the scene a gentle human pulse without breaking its stillness.

The history & when to go

The old town of AlUla has roots stretching back more than eight hundred years, and for much of that time it served as a vital waypoint along the incense and spice routes crossing the northwestern Arabian Peninsula. The settlement grew dense and layered over generations, with families building upward and inward, creating a compact urban fabric that was eventually abandoned in the 1980s. In recent years the site has undergone careful restoration, and the promenade now draws visitors from around the world who come to experience both its archaeological significance and its revived social life.

The promenade is at its most atmospheric in the cooler months between October and March, when the evenings are mild and the string lights come into their own against a darkening desert sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of AlUla finds a home on your wall.
