About the view

AlUla Desert Oasis Pool

A still pool of deep turquoise anchors this view of AlUla's desert oasis, its surface so calm that the tall palms crowding the banks are mirrored in perfect, wavering symmetry below. The scene is framed low and close to the water's edge, so the pool fills nearly half the canvas with shifting greens and teals — colors that feel almost impossible against the scorched sienna and burnt amber of the canyon walls rising behind. Those walls glow in full midday sun, their ridged faces warm and rust-red, while the grove between pool and cliff holds cooler shadow, a dense layering of deep olive and jade. A pale curved edge borders the near bank, and a pale blue sky opens just above the ridge, streaked with thin cloud.

The history & when to go

AlUla has been a place of continuous habitation for thousands of years, sitting along ancient trade routes that connected the Arabian Peninsula to the wider world. The oasis gardens and water channels of the region sustained the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms in antiquity, and later served as a vital stop on the incense road traveled by merchants carrying frankincense and myrrh northward. Today AlUla is recognized as one of the most significant archaeological and natural heritage sites in Saudi Arabia.

Early morning light catches the canyon walls at their most vivid, turning the warm stone almost amber before the sun climbs fully overhead.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of AlUla finds a home on your wall.
