About the view

Zanzibar White Sand Beach

A single tall palm arches across the frame from lower left to upper right, its feathery green crown catching full midday sun against a sky of saturated cobalt blue. The view looks out from the shaded edge of the shoreline, where a grove of tall palms clusters at the right, their long shadows stretching across powder-white sand that glows almost silver in the tropical light. Between the shore and the horizon, the water shifts in distinct bands — turquoise closest to the beach, deepening toward a vivid electric blue at the center of the composition. The palette is bold and clean: no haze, no cloud, just the pure geometry of sand, sea and sky held together by that one dramatic leaning palm.

The history & when to go

Zanzibar's beaches along the island's eastern and northern coasts are among the most celebrated in the Indian Ocean. The island has drawn traders, explorers and travelers for centuries, and its coastline has long been central to that story — a place where arrivals from across the ocean met the land. Today the beaches remain a defining part of Zanzibar's identity, as recognized by visitors as the spice-scented lanes of Stone Town.

The light shown here is truest between June and October, when the dry season brings clear skies and the water settles to its most vivid shades.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Zanzibar finds a home on your wall.
