About the view

Old Fort Stone Town

The view opens across a sun-warmed courtyard, looking up toward the ancient walls of the Old Fort in Stone Town. Tall palms frame either edge of the scene, their feathery crowns catching full tropical light. The fort's thick walls glow in amber and dusty ochre, their crenellated tops set against a vivid sky crowded with billowing white clouds. A slender clock tower rises just beyond the ramparts, lending unexpected vertical elegance. Along the base of the walls, splashes of crimson and saffron mark the stalls of market traders — vivid color against all that warm, weathered stone.

The history & when to go

Known locally as Ngome Kongwe, the Old Fort is the oldest surviving building in Stone Town. Omani Arabs built it between 1698 and 1701 after driving out the Portuguese, constructing its walls partly over the remains of an earlier Portuguese church. Over the centuries it served as a garrison and a prison before becoming a cultural center at the heart of Stone Town's public life. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription awarded to Stone Town in 2000.

Morning is the finest time to visit, when low sun turns the walls golden and the courtyard market comes fully to life.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Zanzibar finds a home on your wall.
