About the view

Yosemite Valley Tunnel View

The view opens at the eastern mouth of the Wawona Tunnel, where Yosemite Valley spills out below in one breathtaking exhale. El Capitan commands the left in a blaze of amber and gold, its sheer warm-toned face catching the low angle of early morning sun, while the ridgelines to the right recede in layered tones of cool slate and dusty blue. Between them, the valley floor is a deep, saturated green — dense tall conifers fading into a soft aquamarine haze that pools in the middle distance. A slender ribbon of white falls quietly down the right-hand cliffs. The sky above is pale and open, touched at the edges with the faintest blush of sunrise cloud.

The history & when to go

Tunnel View has been one of America's most celebrated vantage points since the Wawona Tunnel was completed in 1933. The overlook sits at the valley's western entrance and frames El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome within a single panorama — a composition so naturally balanced that it became central to Ansel Adams's defining body of landscape photography. The valley itself has been protected public land since 1864, when President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant, making it one of the earliest acts of public land preservation in the country.

Early morning in late spring offers the fullest version of this scene, when snowmelt keeps Bridalveil Fall running strong and low mist still drifts through the valley floor below.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Yosemite National Park finds a home on your wall.
