About the view

Yosemite Valley El Capitan

The view opens at valley floor level, looking eastward along a still stretch of the Merced River as it winds through lush green meadow grasses and rounded boulders in the foreground. El Capitan dominates the left side of the scene, its vast vertical face glowing amber and copper where early morning light catches the upper rim, while the lower cliffs cool into deep blue-grey shadow. Across the valley, a serrated ridgeline catches the same warm fire, and the pale sky above holds just enough blush to tell you the sun has barely cleared the horizon. Tall conifers crowd the middle ground in layers of deep forest green, and the river mirrors the whole scene — warm peaks, cold cliffs, and soft sky — in a surface barely disturbed by the grasses growing up through it.

The history & when to go

El Capitan is one of the largest exposed rock faces on earth, rising roughly 3,000 feet above the valley floor. For much of recorded history it was considered unclimbable, until a team led by Warren Harding completed the first ascent in 1958 after 47 days on the wall. It has since become one of the most celebrated climbing destinations in the world, and the 2017 free solo ascent by Alex Honnold brought global attention to a place already legendary among climbers and naturalists alike.

This particular view is at its most vivid in late spring and early summer, when snowmelt keeps the Merced full and the meadows are deepest green beneath the morning alpenglow.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Yosemite National Park finds a home on your wall.
