About the view

Half Dome Glacier Point

The view sweeps out from Glacier Point high above Yosemite Valley, looking across a vast open expanse of layered blue ridgelines receding toward a pale, glowing horizon. Half Dome commands the right side of the composition, its sheer curved face catching a deep amber and copper light — the last warmth of a setting sun that has already left the valley floor in cool shadow. A cluster of tall conifers stands at the left edge of a bare, rounded outcrop, their dark silhouettes grounding the scene against the sea of blue-grey below. Autumn-gold shrubs dot the near slopes, adding a rich, earthy contrast to the cool blues that fill the middle distance. The sky dissolves from soft gold at the rim into a pale, airy cream, as if the day is exhaling.

The history & when to go

Half Dome is one of the most recognized rock formations in North America, rising roughly 4,700 feet above the valley floor. The sheer northwest face is nearly vertical, and its distinctive profile has made it a symbol of Yosemite since the park was established in 1890. John Muir wrote about it at length, and it was among the landscapes that helped build the case for protecting wild places in the United States.

Visiting Glacier Point at sunset rewards patience — arrive an hour before dusk to watch the light move slowly across Half Dome's face, turning it from pale grey to deep, burning gold.
