About the view

Orcas Olympic Mountains Strait

Three dark fins cut the surface of the Strait of Juan de Fuca at golden hour — two tall, one smaller between them — while a faint breath of mist rises just behind. The water beneath them shifts between deep blue and molten amber, catching the last warmth of a setting sun. Across the strait, a long ridge of jagged peaks runs the full width of the horizon, their upper faces glowing copper and dusty rose against a sky that fades from amber at the top to a soft, hazy blush where it meets the sea. The composition is almost perfectly still, the three silhouetted fins holding the center with quiet, unhurried authority.

The history & when to go

The orcas that travel the Strait of Juan de Fuca belong to populations that have used these waters for generations, following the same seasonal routes their ancestors did long before the region was charted by European explorers. The Olympic Mountains visible across the water form the spine of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, a protected wilderness that rises sharply from the shore. Together, this stretch of open water and mountain horizon is one of the most celebrated wildlife corridors in the Pacific Northwest, drawing naturalists and travelers from around the world.

Summer and early autumn offer the longest evenings and the clearest sightlines across the strait, when the mountains hold their color late into the evening and pods are most reliably seen from the water.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Victoria finds a home on your wall.
