About the view

BC Legislature Inner Harbour

The scene opens from the water's edge of Victoria's Inner Harbour, looking north across the still basin toward the British Columbia Parliament Buildings as dusk settles into deep blue. The sky holds that particular hour between last light and full dark — indigo clouds rolling low, the air luminous rather than bright. Hundreds of warm amber lights trace every arch, turret and cornice of the building's facade, and the great central dome glows soft gold against the darkening heavens. A tall, darkly silhouetted tree anchors the right side of the composition, while lamp clusters line the promenade to the left. Below it all, the harbour water acts as a flawless mirror, doubling the amber glow in long, rippling columns of gold and turning the lower half of the canvas into a second, wavering version of the scene above.

The history

The British Columbia Parliament Buildings have housed the province's Legislative Assembly since they were completed in 1897, designed by architect Francis Mawson Rattenbury, who won the commission while still in his twenties. The tradition of outlining the buildings in lights dates to 1897 and has become one of the most recognized nightly spectacles on Canada's west coast.
