About the view

St Marks Square Campanile Arcade

The view opens from deep inside the arcade, looking out across St Mark's Square toward the Campanile, Venice's great bell tower rising in warm terracotta and brick-red tones against a vivid, cloud-streaked blue sky. A procession of rounded arches recedes to the right, their vaulted ceilings glowing in honey and amber, with long diagonal shadows falling across the patterned floor below. The perspective pulls the eye from cool, reflected light on the open piazza into the sheltered warmth of the colonnade, creating a scene balanced between movement and stillness. The tower's green-capped summit catches the midday light, anchoring the composition against the sweeping drama overhead.

The history & when to go

The Campanile has stood watch over St Mark's Square for centuries, though the current structure dates to the early twentieth century following the collapse of its predecessor in 1902. At nearly one hundred metres, it remains the tallest building in Venice and has served historically as a watchtower, a lighthouse, and a landmark for sailors navigating the lagoon. The arcade alongside it forms part of the Procuratie, the long colonnaded buildings that line the square and once housed the offices of the city's senior officials.

Early morning on a clear day rewards visitors with the long, low light that turns the warm tones of the arcade into pure gold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Venice finds a home on your wall.
