About the view

Grand Canal Santa Maria della Salute

The view opens from the canal's edge, looking south along the Grand Canal toward Santa Maria della Salute, which rises at the far end in a sweep of pale domes and tapered towers against a vivid midday blue. Warm-toned facades crowd the left bank, their arched windows and ornate upper stories reflected faintly in water that shifts from jade green in the foreground to a bright, almost tropical turquoise as it recedes. Wooden mooring posts anchor the near corner while small white vessels cut white wakes across the channel, pulling the eye deeper into the composition. The light is high and generous, bleaching the basilica's silhouette to silver-white and flooding the whole scene with the particular clarity Venice holds on a clear afternoon.

The history & when to go

Santa Maria della Salute stands at the entrance to the Grand Canal where it meets the Giudecca Canal, one of the most prominent positions in the city. It was commissioned by the Venetian Senate in 1630 as an offering of gratitude after a devastating plague finally receded, and consecrated in 1687. The basilica has anchored Venice's most celebrated skyline for centuries and remains an active place of worship, drawing pilgrims each November for the Festa della Salute.

Late spring and early autumn bring calmer water and the clearest light for this view, when the midday sun sets the canal glittering without the summer haze.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Venice finds a home on your wall.
