About the view

Ubud Royal Palace Lotus Pond

A long, still channel of water draws the eye directly toward the Ubud Royal Palace, its tiered gate tower glowing a deep terracotta-red against a luminous afternoon sky. Billowing clouds catch the last of the golden light while tall trees frame the composition on either side, their canopies spilling inward to hold the scene in a lush green embrace. On both flanks, lotus ponds stretch wide and dense — broad round leaves layered over one another, punctuated by vivid pink blooms that seem almost to shimmer. The whole image is structured around that single straight path of water leading your gaze forward, creating a symmetry that feels both formal and deeply peaceful.

The history

Puri Saren Agung, as the palace is formally known, has served as the official residence of the Ubud royal family since the early nineteenth century. The ruling family played a central role in fostering the arts across the region, inviting international artists and musicians to collaborate with local Balinese traditions throughout the twentieth century. The palace remains an active cultural site, hosting traditional dance performances in its open courtyards most evenings.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ubud finds a home on your wall.
