About the view

Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

A lone macaque perches atop a moss-draped carved figure, turning to regard the viewer with calm authority. Behind it, a narrow stone path draws the eye deep into the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, lined on both sides by ancient sculpted guardians whose features have softened under thick green growth. A small open pavilion glows faintly at the path's vanishing point, half-swallowed by towering trees whose canopy filters the midday light into shifting shafts of gold and jade. The palette is overwhelmingly alive — every surface vibrates with layered greens, from the bright lime of new leaves overhead to the deep, cool emerald of moss that has claimed each carved surface below.

The history & when to go

The Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a nature reserve and Hindu temple complex that has been tended for centuries by the local village community. It is home to three temple structures that remain active places of worship today, and the resident macaque population is considered sacred within Balinese Hindu tradition. The site covers several hectares of dense forest in the center of Ubud and is managed in cooperation with the village of Padangtegal, balancing conservation, cultural practice, and community life.

The forest light is most beautiful in the late morning, when sun reaches through the canopy in long, warm columns before the afternoon mist softens everything to shadow.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ubud finds a home on your wall.
